Break free from Dieting - Suzanne Fowler

For most of my life the New Year meant a new diet. I went on my first “official” diet when I was in third grade. From that time on I was engaged in a constant struggle with food, and a battle with my weight that only intensified as the years went by. How then, is it possible for this chronic dieter to have found peace with food, lose 53 pounds (which I have kept off for seven years) and wear size six jeans everyday? I should also mention that I have done what most people in the world would think will make you obese for sure--I have had seven children! Yes, my jeans are smaller now than when I was in college, where I was lucky to squeeze into a size twelve. All this is possible only through the transformation The Light Weigh has caused in my life. The Light Weigh is a Bible study and video series that is designed for small groups--because small groups greatly increase success rates for people. The program has been used by men and women all over the world. The Light Weigh runs itself, and has no heavy homework or weigh-ins at the meetings. It is a program written for busy people.

Diets are like false religions. You are handed a new set of stringent rules with each different dieting program.—

“Only eat our food”

“Carbs are bad for you. You need to count them because they make you fat.” “White sugar and flour are the problem, in fact they will make you go out of control.”

“You need to count points and keep track of everything you put in your mouth at all times.”

“You need to drink water, lots of water.”

“You need to figure out what your ancestors were. Were they hunters or gatherers?”

“It’s the junk food, that’s the problem.”

“You need to eat what Jesus ate. Do you like coconut milk soup? He would have.” “You need to cut out the fat. It’s the fat that makes you fat.”

“You need to just cut out eating all together.”

Pullllllllease! Do you really think God intended eating to be so complex, confusing and distracting? Do you think that God intended eating to actually compete with our devotion to Him? The answer is no!

We seek in the refrigerator, what we need to seek in God. Our problem is that we are misdirected. The more you head in the wrong direction, the more lost you become. Perpetual dieting is like perpetual wandering. How did the wanderers of the Bible break the cycle and get to the Promised Land? They finally got fed up and realized if they did not do it God’s way, they were going to stay stuck on the perpetual highway.

What is God’s way? God’s way is simple, but it is not easy, kind of like the Ten Commandments. Due to our fallen state, it is easier to list the Ten Commandments than to follow them, but with our effort and God’s grace, we can overcome our weaknesses and temptations.

When I wrote The Light Weigh eight years ago, I had reached the end of my dieting rope. I simply could not face another diet. I was sick of feeling constantly deprived. I was sick of the dieting obsession. I was sick of the failure. Why could my neighbor eat whatever she wanted and stay thin? Why could she bake homemade cookies and not eat them all, or at least half? Why could she be in her kitchen, just like me, but not be controlled by food? Why didn’t she talk about dieting all the time?

The answer was because food did not control her. She was a great cook, but she could control herself around food. I was a great cook, but I could not control myself around food. So maybe what I needed was not a new diet, maybe I needed to learn to control myself when I was tempted.

This realization was what motivated me to study the Catholic Faith for the answers regarding overcoming temptation. This is why The Light Weigh is different than any program out there. This is why after struggling virtually my whole life with food and dieting, I struggle no more.

The Light Weigh helps people lose any amount of weight, while they learn to eat the foods they enjoy. Learning to eat the foods you enjoy is really important, because that is how you keep your weight off after you lose it. Most diets put you into a false balance which can not be maintained over time or in some cases even for the duration of the diet. The Light Weigh takes the focus off the refrigerator and puts it on God.

When God gets your attention, everything else takes on a perfect balance. The Light Weigh does not make you feel worse about yourself, because the foundational message is that God loves you no matter what you weigh. The Light Weigh is a vehicle for the Holy Spirit to touch hearts and transform lives. As the angel Gabriel says in Luke 1:37 “For with God nothing will be impossible.” The Light Weigh has helped thousands of people break free from chronic dieting and find peace with food while they lose and maintain their weight.
